Earthworks: Theory to Practice – Bridging Design and Construction

The Earthworks: Theory to Practice – Design and Construction workshop, held on 29-30 May 2024, at Rydges Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, provided industry professionals with a structured approach to understanding earthworks principles. The course was based on the 2022 book “Earthworks” and years of practical experience from over 1,000 engineers who previously attended this program.
Rather than relying on rigid numerical targets, the workshop emphasised critical thinking in applying engineering judgment to earthworks decision-making. Through case studies, attendees explored real-world applications of soil behaviour, sub-grade treatment, and specification development, recognising that a test or design suitable in one climate or geology may not apply elsewhere.
Using Innovative In-Situ Testing Methods as an Enabler
As part of the workshop, Robin Power, Business Development & Strategy at Insitutek and Chair of Ground Level Alliance, led an interactive session showcasing innovative in-situ testing methods that are transforming earthworks decision-making. His presentation included:
- In-situ modulus and bearing capacity assessments using Plate Load Testing (PLT) and Light Weight Deflectometers (LWDs).
- Penetration testing methods such as Cone Penetration Testing (CPT), Dynamic Probing Super Heavy (DPSH), PANDA Probe, and Automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP).
- Intelligent compaction technologies for optimising field compaction processes.
This session reinforced the growing adoption of in-situ testing methods in major civil construction projects, providing engineers and project managers with faster, more reliable data to support their decision-making.
We purchased a PANDA 2 machine after using one from another laboratory. The information obtained has saved money on numerous jobs. It is reasonably priced and the after-market service has been great. Highly recommend using Insitutek.
We find the Insitutek team extremely helpful and their knowledge of the equipment and its capabilities is a great resource for our staff.
I have known the team at Insitutek for over ten years. Their professionalism, positivity and enthusiasm for their work is outstanding and I am pleased to recommend them.

A bridge approach transition zone is the area where a road or railway track transitions from the rigid structure of a bridge to the flexible embankment or road pavement, aiming to minimize abrupt changes in stiffness and potential issues like differential settlement.
The 5th International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (ICTG), held in Sydney, marked a milestone in the geotechnical and transportation engineering community. Organized by the UTS Transport Research Centre (UTS-TRC), this prestigious event brought together over 450 delegates from 30 countries, making it a truly global gathering for experts in the field.
The ANCOLD 2024 Conference, held in Adelaide, brought together industry professionals in dam engineering, safety, and sustainability. With 624 delegates in attendance, the event provided a collaborative platform for experts to exchange knowledge on the latest developments in dam infrastructure, safety protocols, and environmental considerations. Key discussions focused on advancing dam engineering practices in response to climate change, improving risk-informed decision-making, and exploring new innovations in dam safety.
