Highlights from the AfPA Regional Road Forum 2024: Advancing Road Maintenance Practices
The AfPA Regional Road Forum 2024, held at Waterview Homebush from 22-23 October 2024, brought together industry leaders, government representatives, and private sector experts to discuss innovative solutions for road maintenance. The event focused on maximising maintenance outcomes and fostering collaboration to enhance the resilience and sustainability of road infrastructure.
The two-day forum featured in-depth discussions on pressing challenges in road maintenance, particularly in response to climate change and evolving infrastructure demands. Industry experts shared evidence-based insights, emphasising the importance of advanced technologies, proactive strategies, and sustainable practices.
A session was delivered by Robin on “In Situ Testing – Its Importance in Delivering More Sustainable and Resilient Road Maintenance Outcomes.” Drawing from practical applications in the field, Robin highlighted how in situ testing provides real-time, site-specific data, leading to more informed decision-making, optimised maintenance strategies, and enhanced road durability. Through case studies and real-world examples, Robin demonstrated the role of in situ testing in improving cost-effectiveness and sustainability in road infrastructure.

Other discussions, led by various speakers, focused on strategies for strengthening road resilience against natural disasters, integrating AI into road maintenance management, adopting sustainable pavements and recycled materials, advancing pavement preservation techniques, and leveraging stabilisation fundamentals and engineered geosynthetic systems to enhance infrastructure durability.
The forum emphasised the need for collaboration between governments, researchers, and private stakeholders, the adoption of technology-driven solutions like AI and in situ testing for improved efficiency, a commitment to sustainability through recycled materials and geosynthetic applications, and proactive disaster preparedness to minimize infrastructure damage.
The AfPA Regional Road Forum 2024 reinforced the industry’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the realm of road maintenance. With the valuable discussions held at the event, stakeholders are better equipped to implement more resilient and cost-effective maintenance practices.
Stay tuned for upcoming events and further developments in the road maintenance sector. For more information, visit AfPA’s website.
We are using the PANDITO DCP for Level 1 site supervision, it’s very portable and we find it handy for flying into sites.
The PANDA probe is giving us and the construction team very useful insight with immediate feedback on the compaction being achieved on a major new rail construction project in QLD. We have two teams working daily using PANDA DCP’s and the Automatic Hammer on the rail formation, enabling real time decision making with confidence, based on the highly repeatable results.
We have found the PANDA to be an invaluable acquisition to our company, using it on projects ranging from Remote Community Housing in Central Australia to a NASA Rocket Launch Facility in Arnhem Land, NT.

A bridge approach transition zone is the area where a road or railway track transitions from the rigid structure of a bridge to the flexible embankment or road pavement, aiming to minimize abrupt changes in stiffness and potential issues like differential settlement.
The 5th International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (ICTG), held in Sydney, marked a milestone in the geotechnical and transportation engineering community. Organized by the UTS Transport Research Centre (UTS-TRC), this prestigious event brought together over 450 delegates from 30 countries, making it a truly global gathering for experts in the field.
The ANCOLD 2024 Conference, held in Adelaide, brought together industry professionals in dam engineering, safety, and sustainability. With 624 delegates in attendance, the event provided a collaborative platform for experts to exchange knowledge on the latest developments in dam infrastructure, safety protocols, and environmental considerations. Key discussions focused on advancing dam engineering practices in response to climate change, improving risk-informed decision-making, and exploring new innovations in dam safety.
